Ssh (Secure Shell) a program for logging into a remote machine and for
executing commands in a remote machine.  It is intended to replace
rlogin and rsh, and provide secure encrypted communications between
two untrusted hosts over an insecure network.  X11 connections and
arbitrary TCP/IP ports can also be forwarded over the secure channel.

This is an all-in-one package that includes both the server and the
clients.

The GIMP is an image manipulation program suitable for photo retouching,
image composition and image authoring.  Many people find it extremely useful
in creating logos and other graphics for web pages.  The GIMP has many of the
tools and filters you would expect to find in similar commercial offerings,
and some interesting extras as well.

The GIMP provides a large image manipulation toolbox, including channel
operations and layers, effects, sub-pixel imaging and anti-aliasing,
and conversions, all with multi-level undo.

This version of The GIMP includes a scripting facility, but many of the
included scripts rely on fonts that we cannot distribute.  The GIMP ftp
site has a package of fonts that you can install by yourself, which
includes all the fonts needed to run the included scripts.  Some of the
fonts have unusual licensing requirements; all the licenses are documented
in the package.  Get ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/fonts/freefonts-0.10.tar.gz
and ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/fonts/sharefonts-0.10.tar.gz if you are so
inclined.  Alternatively, choose fonts which exist on your system before
running the scripts.

PHP is an HTML-embedded scripting language.  PHP attempts to make it
easy for developers to write dynamically generated web pages.  PHP
also offers built-in database integration for several commercial
and non-commercial database management systems, so writing a
database-enabled web page with PHP is fairly simple.  The most
common use of PHP coding is probably as a replacement for CGI
scripts.  The mod_php module enables the Apache web server to
understand and process the embedded PHP language in web pages.

The qt-devel package contains the files necessary to develop
applications using the Qt GUI toolkit: the header files, the Qt meta
object compiler, the man pages, the HTML documentation and example

provides Qt documentation in HTML format.

Install qt-devel if you want to develop GUI applications using the Qt
toolkit.

Qt is a GUI software toolkit which simplifies the task of writing and
maintaining GUI (Graphical User Interface) applications for the X
Window System. Qt is written in C++ and is fully object-oriented.

This package contains the shared library needed to run Qt
applications, as well as the README files for Qt.

The nfs-utils package provides a daemon for the kernel NFS server and
related tools, which provides a much higher level of performance than the
traditional Linux NFS server used by most users.

This package also contains the showmount program.  Showmount queries the
mount daemon on a remote host for information about the NFS (Network File
System) server on the remote host.  For example, showmount can display the
clients which are mounted on that host.

util-linux contains a large variety of low-level system utilities
necessary for a functional Linux system.  This includes, among other
things, configuration tools such as fdisk and system programs such
as login.

This package includes mount and losetup which are packaged seperately in
stock Red Hat distributions. tunelp is also included.

Binutils is a collection of utilities necessary for compiling programs. It
includes the assembler and linker, as well as a number of other
miscellaneous programs for dealing with executable formats.

Ethereal is a network traffic analyzer for Unix-ish operating systems.
It is based on GTK+, a graphical user interface library, and libpcap,
a packet capture and filtering library.

NcFTP is a ftp client with many advantages over the standard one. It
includes command line editing, command histories, support for recursive
gets, automatic logins, background downloading and much more.

This is the Magick++ package, the object-oriented C++ API to the ImageMagick
image-processing library.

This is the ImageMagick perl support package. It includes perl modules and
support files for access to ImageMagick library from perl.

ImageMagick is an image display, conversion, and manipulation tool.
It runs under X windows.  It is very powerful in terms of it's
ability to allow the user to edit images.  It can handle many
different formats as well.

This is the ImageMagick development package.  It includes the static
libraries and header files for use in developing your own applications
that make use of the ImageMagick code and/or APIs.

This package contains utilities and daemons to help synchronize your
computer's time to UTC standard time. It includes ntpdate, a program
similar to rdate, and ntpd, a daemon which adjusts the system time
continuously.

WARNING: This RPM assumes that your BIOS clock is in UTC.

LILO (LInux LOader) is a basic system program which boots your Linux
system.  LILO loads the Linux kernel from a floppy or a hard drive,
boots the kernel and passes control of the system to the kernel.  LILO
can also boot other operating systems.

Mod_perl incorporates a Perl interpreter into the Apache web
server, so that the Apache web server can directly execute Perl
code.  Mod_perl links the Perl runtime library into the Apache
web server and provides an object-oriented Perl interface for
Apache's C language API.  The end result is a quicker CGI script
turnaround process, since no external Perl interpreter has to
be started.

Apache is a powerful, full-featured, efficient and freely-available
Web server. Apache is also the most popular Web server on the
Internet.

Server will run as httpd:httpd rather than nobody:nobody.
Make sure user and group httpd exist before installing this package.

Hypertext info file viewer. User interface similar to lynx.
It is based on ncurses. It can handle now as well info
pages as man pages. Regexp searching included.

Samba provides an SMB server which can be used to provide
network services to SMB (sometimes called "Lan Manager")
clients, including various versions of MS Windows, OS/2,
and other Linux machines. Samba also provides some SMB
clients, which complement the built-in SMB filesystem
in Linux. Samba uses NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) protocols
and does NOT need NetBEUI (Microsoft Raw NetBIOS frame)
protocol.

This package doesn't include SWAT.

The iputils package contains ping, a basic networking tool.  The ping
command sends a series of ICMP protocol ECHO_REQUEST packets to a
specified network host and can tell you if that machine is alive and
receiving network traffic.

Netfilter is a framework for filtering and mangling network packets
that pass through your Linux box. iptables is the corresponding user
space program.

Linux 2.2 maintains compatibility with the basic configuration utilities of
the network (ifconfig, route) but a new utility is required to exploit the new
characteristics and features of the kernel. This package includes the new
utilities (/sbin/ip, /sbin/rtmon).

Linux IP Firewalling Chains is an update to (and hopefully an
improvement upon) the normal Linux Firewalling code, for 2.1 and 2.2
kernels. It lets you do things like firewalls, IP masquerading, etc.

Sendmail is a Mail Transport Agent, which is the program
that moves mail from one machine to another.  Sendmail implements a
general internetwork mail routing facility, featuring aliasing and
forwarding, automatic routing to network gateways, and flexible
configuration.

This package has SMTP AUTH and STARTTLS built-in.

CVS is a front end to the rcs(1) revision control system which extends
the notion of revision control from a collection of files in a single
directory to a hierarchical collection of directories consisting of
revision controlled files.  These directories and files can be
combined together to form a software release.  CVS provides the
functions necessary to manage these software releases and to control
the concurrent editing of source files among multiple software
developers.

SLRN is a powerful, easy to use, threaded Internet news reader.  SLRN is
highly customizable and allows you to design complex filters to sort or kill
news articles.  SLRN works well over slow network connections, and includes
a utility for reading news off-line.

This package contains the S-Lang extension language static libraries
and header files which you'll need if you want to develop S-Lang based
applications.  Documentation which may help you write S-Lang based
applications is also included.

S-Lang is an interpreted language and a programming library.  The
S-Lang language was designed so that it can be easily embedded into
a program to provide the program with a powerful extension language.
The S-Lang library, provided in this package, provides the S-Lang
extension language.  S-Lang's syntax resembles C, which makes it easy
to recode S-Lang procedures in C if you need to.

Nmap is a utility for network exploration or security auditing. It
supports ping scanning (determine which hosts are up), many port
scanning techniques (determine what services the hosts are offering),
and TCP/IP fingerprinting (remote host operating system
identification). Nmap also offers flexible target and port
specification, decoy scanning, determination of TCP sequence
predictability characteristics, sunRPC scanning, reverse-identd
scanning, and more.

Apache is a powerful, full-featured, efficient and freely-available
Web server. Apache is also the most popular Web server on the
Internet.

Server will run as httpd:httpd rather than nobody:nobody.
Make sure user and group httpd exist before installing this package.

This package has modssl built-in, and comes with a set of dummy key and
certificate. Be sure to install your real key and certificate before
putting this server into real use.

Qps is a visual process manager, an X11 version of "top" or "ps"
that displays processes in a window and lets you sort and manipulate
them.

The "sar" and "iostat" commands for the Linux operating system.

Lsof's name stands for LiSt Open Files, and it does just that. It lists
information about files that are open by the processes running on a UNIX
system.

This package contains all symbolic links for ssh1 which save you typing
the extra `1'. Install it in either of the following cases:
1. You have only ssh1 on your system.
2. You have both ssh1 and ssh2, and you want to use ssh1 by default.

Red Hat Linux uses procmail for all local mail delivery.  In addition
to regluar mail delivery duties, procmail can be used to do many
different automatic filtering, presorting, and mail handling jobs.
It is the basis for the SmartList mailing list processor.  This compile has
support for qpopper hashed mail subdirectories for large numbers of users.

This package is compiled with only local mail spool locking support.
To enable NFS mail spool locking support it needs to be rebuilt.

The ppp package contains the PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) daemon and
documentation for PPP support.  The PPP protocol provides a method for
transmitting datagrams over serial point-to-point links. PPP is
usually used to dial in to an ISP (Internet Service Provider) or other
organization over a modem and phone line.

Bash is an sh-compatible command language interpreter that
executes commands read from the standard input or from a
file.  Bash also incorporates useful features from the
Korn and C shells (ksh and csh).

Bash is ultimately intended to be a conformant implementation
of the IEEE Posix Shell and Tools specification (IEEE
Working Group 1003.2).

The e2fsprogs package contains a number of utilities for creating,
checking, modifying and correcting any inconsistencies in second
extended (ext2) filesystems.  E2fsprogs contains e2fsck (used to repair
filesystem inconsistencies after an unclean shutdown), mke2fs (used to
initialize a partition to contain an empty ext2 filesystem), debugfs
(used to examine the internal structure of a filesystem, to manually
repair a corrupted filesystem or to create test cases for e2fsck), tune2fs
(used to modify filesystem parameters) and most of the other core ext2fs
filesystem utilities.

E2fsprogs-devel contains the libraries and header files needed to
develop second extended (ext2) filesystem-specific programs.

The cyrus-sasl package contains the SASL library API implementation
for the Cyrus mail system.

Sfio is a library for managing I/O streams. It provides functionality
similar to that of Stdio, the ANSI C Standard I/O library, but via a
distinct interface that is more powerful, robust and efficient.

This kit builds a DES encryption library and a DES encryption program.
It supports ecb, cbc, ofb, cfb, triple ecb, triple cbc, triple ofb,
triple cfb, and MIT's pcbc encryption modes and also has a fast implementation
of crypt(3). It contains support routines to read keys from a terminal,
generate a random key, generate a key from an arbitrary length string,
read/write encrypted data from/to a file descriptor.
The implementation was written so as to conform with the manual entry
for the des_crypt(3) library routines from MIT's project Athena.

This package contains the dynamic library which is required to compile
the SMTP AUTH part of sendmail-8.11.0.

Real Networks RealPlayer.

The libpng-devel package contains the header files and static libraries
necessary for developing programs using the PNG (Portable Network
Graphics) library.

If you want to develop programs which will manipulate PNG image format
files, you should install libpng-devel.  You'll also need to install the
libpng package.

The libpng package contains a library of functions for creating and
manipulating PNG (Portable Network Graphics) image format files.  PNG is
a bit-mapped graphics format similar to the GIF format.  PNG was created to
replace the GIF format, since GIF uses a patented data compression
algorithm.

Libpng should be installed if you need to manipulate PNG format image
files.

Mutt is a small but very poweful full-screen Unix mail client. Features
include MIME, POP3, multiple mailbox formats, color, message threading,
scoring, and bindable keys.

This package is the international version with support for PGP6.

This tool allows ipmasq addtional setup, it is needed if you
want to activate port forwarding or auto forwarding in 2.1/2.2 kernels.

The ftp package provides the standard UNIX command-line FTP (File
Transfer Protocol) client.  FTP is a widely used protocol for
transferring files over the Internet and for archiving files.

If your system is on a network, you should install ftp in order to do
file transfers.

The bind-devel package contains all the include files and the
library required for DNS (Domain Name Service) development
for bind versions 8.x.x.

You should install bind-devel if you want to develop bind DNS
applications. If you install bind-devel, you'll need to install
bind, as well.

Bind-utils contains a collection of utilities for querying DNS (Domain
Name Service) name servers to find out information about Internet hosts.
These tools will provide you with the IP addresses for given host names,
as well as other information about registered domains and network
addresses.

You should install bind-utils if you need to get information from DNS name
servers.

Bind includes the named name server, which resolves host names to IP
addresses (and vice versa), and a resolver library (a set of routines
in a system library that provide the interface for programs to use when
accessing domain name services).  A name server is a network service which
enables clients to name resources or objects and share this information
with other network machines.  The named name server can be used on
workstations as a caching name server, but is generally only needed on
one machine for an entire network.

This package includes configurations for a simple caching-only name server.

Cdrecord allows you to create CD's on a CD-Recorder (SCSI/ATAPI).
Supports data, audio, mixed, multi-session and CD+ discs etc.

This package includes cdrecord-1.9, cdda2wav-1.0,
mkisofs-1.13a01.

Remember to customize /etc/default/cdrecord before using cdrecord.

ProFTPD is a highly configurable ftp daemon for unix and unix-like
operating systems.

ProFTPD is designed to be somewhat of a "drop-in" replacement for wu-ftpd.
Full online documentation is available at http://www.proftpd.org,
including a server configuration directive reference manual.

The default configuration is to run in inetd mode, with one incoming
directory, and use tcp_wrapper.

The  LPRng  software  is an enhanced, extended, and portable
implementation of the Berkeley LPR print spooler functionality.
While providing the same interface and meeting RFC1179 requirements,
the implementation  is  completely new and provides support for
the  following  features:  lightweight  (no  databases needed) lpr,
lpc, and lprm programs; dynamic redirection  of  print queues;
automatic job holding; highly verbose  diagnostics; multiple printers
serving a single  queue;  client  programs  do not need to run SUID
root;  greatly enhanced security checks; and a greatly improved
permission and authorization mechanism.

These are the C header files for the Linux kernel, which define structures
and constants that are needed when building most standard programs under
Linux, as well as to rebuild the kernel.

Libpcap provides a portable framework for low-level network
monitoring.  Libpcap can provide network statistics collection,
security monitoring and network debugging.  Since almost every system
vendor provides a different interface for packet capture, the libpcap
authors created this system-independent API to ease in porting and to
alleviate the need for several system-dependent packet capture modules
in each application.

Tcpdump is a command-line tool for monitoring network traffic.
Tcpdump can capture and display the packet headers on a particular
network interface or on all interfaces.  Tcpdump can display all of
the packet headers, or just the ones that match particular criteria.

less is a text file viewer much like 'more', only better.

The procps package contains a set of system utilities which provide
system information.  Procps includes ps, free, sessreg, skill, snice,
tload, top, uptime, vmstat, w, and watch.  The ps command displays
a snapshot of running processes.  The top command provides a
repetitive update of the statuses of running processes.  The free
command displays the amounts of free and used memory on your system.
Sessreg is a simple program for managing utmp/wtmp entries for xdm
sessions.  The skill command sends a terminate command (or another
specified signal) to a specified set of processes.  The snice
command is used to change the scheduling priority of specified
processes.  The tload command prints a graph of the current system
load average to a specified tty.  The uptime command displays the
current time, how long the system has been running, how many users
are logged on and system load averages for the past one, five and
fifteen minutes.  The w command displays a list of the users who
are currently logged on and what they're running.  The watch program
watches a running program.  The vmstat command displays virtual
memory statistics about processes, memory, paging, block I/O, traps
and CPU activity.

The VIsual editor iMproved is an updated and feature-added clone of the 'vi'
editor that comes with almost all UN*X systems. It adds multiple windows,
multi-level undo, block highliting, and many other features to the standard
vi program.

This program adjusts an audio mixer from X, the console, a terminal,
the command line or a script.

A GNU tool for controlling the generation of executables and other
non-source files of a program from the program's source files.  Make
allows users to build and install packages without any significant
knowledge about the details of the build process.  The details about how
the program should be built are provided for make in the program's
makefile.

The GNU make tool should be installed on your system because it is
commonly used to simplify the process of installing programs.

Bzip2 is a freely available, patent-free, high quality data compressor.
Bzip2 compresses files to within 10 to 15 percent of the capabilities of the
best techniques available.  However, bzip2 has the added benefit of
being approximately two times faster at compression and six times faster
at decompression than those techniques.  Bzip2 is not the fastest
compression utility, but it does strike a balance between speed and
compression capability.

The shared library of bzip2-0.9.5d is also bundled in this package so
executables dynamically linked against it will still run without the
need to re-link.

gd is a graphics library. It allows your code to quickly draw images
complete with lines, arcs, text, multiple colors, cut and paste from
other images, and flood fills, and write out the result as a .PNG file.
This is particularly useful in World Wide Web applications, where .PNG
is one of the formats accepted for inline images by most browsers.

GNU Octave is a high-level language, primarily intended for numerical
computations. It provides a convenient command line interface for
solving linear and nonlinear problems numerically, and for performing
other numerical experiments using a language that is mostly compatible
with Matlab. It may also be used as a batch-oriented language.

Octave has extensive tools for solving common numerical linear algebra
problems, finding the roots of nonlinear equations, integrating
ordinary functions, manipulating polynomials, and integrating ordinary
differential and differential-algebraic equations. It is easily
extensible and customizable via user-defined functions written in
Octave's own language, or using dynamically loaded modules written in
C++, C, Fortran, or other languages.

This is a full featured, command driven debugger. It allows you to
trace the exectuion of programs and examine their internal state
at any time. It works for C and C++ compiled with the GNU C compiler
gcc.

GNU libtool is a set of shell scripts to automatically configure
UNIX architectures to build shared libraries in generic fashion.

NEdit is a standard GUI (Graphical User Interface) style text editor for
programs and plain-text files. Users of Macintosh and MS Windows based
text editors should find NEdit a familiar and comfortable environment.
NEdit provides all of the standard menu, dialog, editing, and mouse
support, as well as all of the standard shortcuts to which the users of
modern GUI based environments are accustomed. For users of older style
Unix editors, welcome to the world of mouse-based editing!

This package is statically linked against OSF/Motif-2.1.30.

DDD is a graphical front-end for command-line debuggers such as GDB,
DBX, WDB, Ladebug, JDB, XDB, the Perl debugger, or the Python
debugger.  Besides ``usual'' front-end features such as viewing source
texts, DDD has become famous through its interactive graphical data
display, where data structures are displayed as graphs.

This package is statically linked against OSF/Motif 2.1.30.

Static libraries and header files for the GIMP's X libraries, which are
available as public libraries.  GLIB includes generally useful data
structures, GDK is a drawing toolkit which provides a thin layer over
Xlib to help automate things like dealing with different color depths,
and GTK is a widget set for creating user interfaces.

The X libraries originally written for the GIMP, which are now used by
several other programs as well.

Static libraries and header files for the support library for the GIMP's X
libraries, which are available as public libraries.  GLIB includes generally
useful data structures.

Handy library of utility functions.  Development libs and headers
are in glib-devel.

A program that plays WAV samples together with MP3 or MOD background
music.

This package is built from a precompiled binary which has all the
"uncommon" libraries (SDL, smpeg, libesd, libaudiofile) statically
linked in and therefore should install on any recent Linux installation
without the need for any additional packages.

This a terminal based WWW browser. While it does not make any attempt
at displaying graphics, it has good support for HTML text formatting,
forms, and tables.

SSL patch for Lynx from http://www.moxienet.com/lynx/ is compiled in
so SSL is supported.

Install the yp-tools package if you need NIS client programs for machines
on your network.  You will also need to install the ypbind package on
every machine running NIS client programs.  If you need an NIS server,
you'll need to install the ypserv package on one machine on the network.

rsync is a replacement for rcp that has many more features.

rsync uses the "rsync algorithm" which provides a very fast method for
bringing remote files into sync. It does this by sending just the
differences in the files across the link, without requiring that both

Window Maker is a window manager designed to emulate the look
and feel of part of the NEXTSTEP(tm) GUI. It's supposed to be fast,
relatively small, feature rich and easy to configure, with
a simple and elegant appearance borrowed from NEXTSTEP(tm).

This package contains static libraries for building Window-Maker-enhanced
applications.

This package contains libraries and header files for developing
programs which use libPropList.

The libPropList library, hereafter referred to as PL, uses an opaque
data type to represent a tree structure made of strings, data blocks,
arrays and dictionaries (key-value pair lists). This structure can be
manipulated, written out to and read in from a file, and synchronized
with the contents of a file. The purpose of PL is to closely mimick the
behaviour of the property lists used in GNUstep/OPENSTEP (there formed
with the NSString, NSData, NSArray and NSDictionary classes) and to be
compatible with it. PL enables programs that use configuration or
preference files to make these compatible with GNUstep/OPENSTEP's user
defaults handling mechanism, without needing to use Objective-C or
GNUstep/OPENSTEP themselves.

A customizable, extensible automatic printer filter.
Lets you automatically detect and print just about any
data type you can find a conversion utility for.  This
filter is written in C and is controlled completely
from an external printer configuration file.

TeX formats a file of interspersed text and commands and outputs a
typesetter independent file (called DVI, which is short for DeVice
Independent).  TeX capabilities and language are described in The
TeXbook, by Knuth.

librc4 implements rc4 encryption and decryption.  It is *not*, so far
as we know, exportable from the United States without a permit.

Blade's MP3 Encoder (BladeEnc) is a freeware MP3 encoder. It is based on
the same ISO compression routines as mpegEnc, so you can expect roughly
the same, or better, quality. The main difference is the appearance and
speed. BladeEnc doesn't have a nice, user-friendly interface like mpegEnc,
but it is more than three times faster, and it works with several popular
front-end graphical user interfaces.

The glibc-devel package contains the header and object files necessary
for developing programs which use the standard C libraries (which are
used by nearly all programs).  If you are developing programs which
will use the standard C libraries, your system needs to have these
standard header and object files available in order to create the
executables.

Install glibc-devel if you are going to develop programs which will
use the standard C libraries.

The glibc package contains standard libraries which are used by
multiple programs on the system. In order to save disk space and
memory, as well as to make upgrading easier, common system code is
kept in one place and shared between programs. This particular package
contains the most important sets of shared libraries: the standard C
library and the standard math library. Without these two libraries, a
Linux system will not function.  The glibc package also contains
national language (locale) support and timezone databases.

Acrobat Reader is part of the Adobe Acrobat family of software, which lets you
view, distribute, and print documents in Portable Document Format (PDF) --
regardless of the computer, operating system, fonts, or application used to
create the original file.  PDF files retain all the formatting, fonts, and
graphics of the original document, and virtually any PostScript(TM) document
can be converted into a PDF file. Adobe Acrobat Reader have a plug-in for
Netscape Navigator to to view PDF files inline.

Starting from kernel 2.3.14, netfilter controls firewalling and packet
filtering. It replaces ipchains and bpfilter.

stunnel is a socket wrapper which can be used to give ordinary
applications SSL (secure sockets layer) support. For example, it
can be used in conjunction with a imapd to create a SSL secure IMAP
server.

Ghostscript is a PostScript interpreter. It can render both PostScript
and PDF compliant files to devices which include an X window, many printer
formats (including support for colour printers), and popular graphics
file formats.

Pretty Good Privacy is public key encryption for the masses. It supports
keys up to 1024 bits, and is generally awesome. The de facto security
standard of today.

SMPEG is based on UC Berkeley's mpeg_play software MPEG decoder

Fetchmail is a free, full-featured, robust, and well-documented remote

retrieves mail from remote mail servers and forwards it to your local
(client) machine's delivery system, so it can then be be read by
normal mail user agents such as mutt, elm, pine, (x)emacs/gnus, or mailx.
Comes with an interactive GUI configurator suitable for end-users.

MSWordView is a program that understands the Microsoft Word 8
binary file format (Office97) and is able to convert Word
documents into HTML, which can then be read with a browser.

wv is a suite of programs to help convert Word Documents to HTML.

This is the GNU plotting package.  It can be used to graph
data in an X window or to a file.

GD is a autoloadable interface module for libgd, a popular library
for creating and manipulating PNG files.  With this library you can
create PNG images on the fly or modify existing files.

The GNU tar program saves many files together into one archive and
can restore individual files (or all of the files) from the archive.
Tar can also be used to add supplemental files to an archive and to
update or list files in the archive.

Tar includes multivolume support, automatic archive compression/
decompression, the ability to perform remote archives and the
ability to perform incremental and full backups.

If you want to use Tar for remote backups, you'll also need to
install the rmt package.

You should install the tar package, because you'll find its
compression and decompression utilities essential for working
with files.

Fnlib is a library that provides full, scalable 24 bit color font
rendering abilities for the X Window System.

The fnlib-devel package contains headers, static libraries and
documentation for Fnlib development.

Install fnlib-devel if you want to develop Fnlib applications.

The header files, static libraries and documentation needed for
developing Imlib applications.  Imlib is an image loading and rendering
library for X11R6.

Install the imlib-devel package if you want to develop Imlib applications.
You'll also need to install the imlib and imlib_cfgeditor packages.

Imlib is a display depth independent image loading and rendering library.
Imlib is designed to simplify and speed up the process of loading images

libwmf is a library for unix like machines that can convert wmf
files into other formats, currently it supports a gd binding
to convert to gif, and an X one to draw direct to an X window
or pixmap.

Majordomo is a program which automates the management of Internet
mailing lists. Commands are sent to Majordomo via electronic mail to
handle all aspects of list maintainance. Once a list is set up,
virtually all operations can be performed remotely, requiring no
intervention upon the postmaster of the list site.

Wmmail is a mail monitoring applet designed for the
Windowmaker dock.

A modular screen saver and locker for the X Window System.
Highly customizable: allows the use of any program that
can draw on the root window as a display mode.
More than 80 display modes are included in this package.

Writes audio CD-Rs in disc-at-once (DAO) mode allowing
control over pre-gaps (length down to 0, nonzero audio
data) and sub-channel information like ISRC codes. All
data that is written to the disc must be specified with
a text file. Audio data may be in WAVE or raw format.

This package is needed to develop programs that use gtk--, the C++
extensions to gtk+.

Gtk-- is a C++ wrapper for GTK, the Gimp ToolKit. GTK is a
library for creating graphical user interfaces. Gtk-- is
distributed under GNU LGPL.

A compiler aimed at integrating all the optimizations and features
necessary for a high-performance and stable development environment.

This package contains all the components of gcc, including c, c++, objc,
g77, chill and java. C++ shared libraries and headers which usually go
to libstdc++ and libstdc++-devel are also bundled in this package.

To minimize possible incompatibility problems it is recommended that you
install binutils-2.9.5.0.3-1.i386.rpm and libstdc++-rh60-4.i386.rpm (or
newer versions) together with this one, both of which are also built by
Hao Li and downloadable from the same place where you find this RPM.

The bc package includes bc and dc.  Bc is an arbitrary precision numeric
processing arithmetic language.  Dc is an interactive arbitrary precision
stack based calculator, which can be used as a text mode calculator.

Install the bc package if you need its number handling capabilities or
if you would like to use its text mode calculator.

Macromedia is proud to release the Flash Player 4 Netscape plug-in for
the Linux operating system.

Indent is a GNU program for beautifying C code, so that it is easier to
read.  Indent can also convert from one C writing style to a different
one.  Indent understands correct C syntax and tries to handle incorrect
C syntax.

Install the indent package if you are developing applications in C and
you'd like to format your code automatically.

libavl is a library in ANSI C for manipulation of balanced binary trees.
Functions for use with three varieties of AVL tree and one type of
red-black tree are included.  There is full documentation, including an
explanation of what AVL and red-black trees are and why you'd use them,
in Texinfo, Info, HTML, and plain text formats.

A Image viewer based on X-Window system and GTK+.
The main purpose is to port ACD See, which is a very popular
image viewer in M$ world, to Unix platform.

Texinfo is a documentation system that can produce both online information
and printed output from a single source file.  Normally, you'd have to
write two separate documents: one for online help or other online
information and the other for a typeset manual or other printed work.
Using Texinfo, you only need to write one source document.  Then when the
work needs revision, you only have to revise one source document.  The GNU
Project uses the Texinfo file format for most of its documentation.

Install texinfo if you want a documentation system for producing both
online and print documentation from the same source file and/or if you are
going to write documentation for the GNU Project.

LyX is a modern approach of writing documents with a computer
which breaks with the tradition of the obsolete typewriter
concept.  It is designed for people who want a professional
output with a minimum of time effort, without becoming specia-
lists in typesetting.  Compared to common word processors LyX
will increase the productivity a lot, since most of the type-
setting will be done by the computer, not the author.  With LyX
the author can concentrate on the contents of his writing,
since the computer will take care of the look.

This package includes libNoVersion-2.1.1.so.  It is needed if you
choose to install Hao Li's glibc RPMs, while wish to maintain
backward compatibility with prebuilt binaries already dynamically
linked against this library.

JitterBug is a cgi-bin tool for problem reporting and tracking developed
by Andrew Tridgell for the Samba Team.

Read /usr/doc/jitterbug-1.6.2/README.hli for instructions on how
to set up jitterbug for a real software package.

This is a collection of the basic tools necessary for setting up networking
on a Linux machine. It includes ifconfig, route, netstat, rarp, and
some other minor tools.

This CDDA reader distribution ('cdparanoia') reads audio from the CDROM
directly as data, with no analog step between, and writes the data to a file
or pipe as .wav, .aifc or as raw 16 bit linear PCM.

The MM library is a 2-layer abstraction library which simplifies the usage of
shared memory between forked (and this way strongly related) processes under
Unix platforms. On the first layer it hides all platform dependent
implementation details (allocation and locking) when dealing with shared
memory segments and on the second layer it provides a high-level malloc(3)-
style API for a convenient and well known way to work with data-structures
inside those shared memory segments.

The library is released under the term of an open-source (BSD-style) license
because it's originally written for a proposed use inside next versions of
the Apache webserver as a base library for providing shared memory pools to
Apache modules (because currently Apache modules can only use heap-allocated
memory which isn't shared accross the pre-forked server processes). The
requirement actually comes from comprehensive modules like mod_ssl, mod_perl
and mod_php which would benefit a lot from easy to use shared memory pools.
Mostly all functionality (except for shared locks in addition to exclusive
locks and multi-segment memory areas instead of single-segment memory areas)
is already implemented and the library already works fine under FreeBSD,
Linux and Solaris and should also adjust itself for most other Unix platforms
with it's GNU Autoconf and GNU Libtool based configuration and compilation
procedure.

This package contains the lesstif static library and header files
required to develop motif-1.2-based applications, as well as
mxmkmf for Lesstif.

Lesstif is an API compatible clone of the Motif toolkit.
Currently Lesstif is partially implemented with most of the API in place.
Having said this, some of the internal functionality is still missing.
Many Motif applications compile and run out-of-the-box with LessTif,
and we want to hear about those that don't.

Uil and xmbind.

MWM is a window manager that adheres largely to the Motif mwm specification.

This is the *new* kernel NFS server and related tools.  It provides a much
higher level of performance than the traditional Linux user-land NFS server.

The nfs-clients package contains the showmount program. Showmount
queries the mount daemon on a remote host for information about the
NFS (Network File System) server on the remote host.  For example,
showmount can display the clients which are mounted on that host.  This
package is not needed to mount NFS volumes.

Install nfs-clients if you'd like to use the showmount tool for
querying NFS servers.

The nfs-lock pacage contains programs which support the NFS file lock.
Install nfs-lock if you want to use file lock over NFS.

print the current directory), seq (to print numeric sequences),
sleep (to suspend execution for a specified time), stty (to
print/change terminal settings), su (to become another user or the
superuser), tee (to send output to multiple files), test (to
evaluate an expression), true (to return a successful exit status),
tty (to print the terminal name), uname (to print system information),
users (to print current users' names), who (to print a list of the
users who are currently logged in), whoami (to print the effective
user id), and yes (to print a string indefinitely).

A set of GNU utilities for modifying the contents of files, including
programs for splitting, joining, comparing and modifying files.

slocate searches through a central database (updated nightly) for files
which match a given glob pattern. This allows you to quickly find files

New binaries built with Hao Li's gcc-2.95-1.i386.rpm will be dynamically
linked against libstdc++-3-libc6.1-2-2.10.0.so, which is provided in
the gcc RPM itself.

The gawk packages contains the GNU version of awk, a text processing
utility.  Awk interprets a special-purpose programming language to do
quick and easy text pattern matching and reformatting jobs. Gawk should
be upwardly compatible with the Bell Labs research version of awk and
is almost completely compliant with the 1993 POSIX 1003.2 standard for
awk.

Install the gawk package if you need a text processing utility. Gawk is
considered to be a standard Linux tool for processing text.

This is the GNU parser generator which is mostly compatible with yacc. Many
programs use this as part of their build process. Bison is only needed on
systems that are used for development.

M(y)sql.pm and DBD::mSQL(mysql) implement two different approaches to
communicate with an mSQL or mysql server. DBD::mSQL(mysql) is built
upon the DBI, the generic Perl Database Interface. It brings you an
identical interface to a broad variety of databases and is in this
regard comparable to ODBC. The advantage of the DBI approach is
portability and interoperability. M(y)sql.pm are the elder species.
They were written before DBI was available but inspired by an early
draft of the DBI specification. As they have been circulating longer
they are more mature and pretty stable. They're also more complete
than DBD::mSQL and DBD::mysql.

DBperl is a database access Application Programming Interface (API)
for the Perl Language. The DBperl API Specification defines a set of
functions, variables and conventions that provide a consistent database
interface independent of the actual database being used.

Perl is an interpreted language optimized for scanning arbitrary text
files, extracting information from those text files, and printing reports
based on that information.  It's also a good language for many system
management tasks.  The language is intended to be practical (easy to use,
efficient, complete) rather than beautiful (tiny, elegant, minimal).

mpg123 is a real time MPEG Audio Player for Layer 1,2 and Layer3.

Libwww-perl is a collection of Perl modules which provides a simple and
consistent application programming interface (API) to the World-Wide Web.
The main focus of the library is to provide classes and functions that
allow you to write WWW clients, thus libwww-perl said to be a WWW
client library. The library also contain modules that are of more
general use and even classes that help you implement simple HTTP
servers.

libnet is a collection of Perl modules which provides a simple
and consistent programming interface (API) to the client side
of various protocols used in the internet community.

This package contains the URI.pm module with friends.  The module
implements the URI class.  Objects of this class represent Uniform
Resource Identifier (URI) references as specified in RFC 2396.

This package contains a base64 encoder/decoder and a quoted-printable
encoder/decoder.  These encoding methods are specified in RFC 2045 -
MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions).

This is a collection of modules that parse HTML text documents. These
modules used to be part of the libwww-perl distribution, but are now
unbundled in order to facilitate a separate development track.

This module provides GNU-style option processing for Perl 5 scripts,
with both long and short options.  Please see the documentation at the
end of the module for instructions on its use and licensing
restrictions.

This is a Perl extension interface to the RSA Data Security Inc. MD5,
MD2, as well as NIST SHA-1, Message Digest algorithms.  This package
also provide modules which calculate HMAC digests.

JDK for linux is just like it says, the Java Development Kit for Linux.
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is included.
